Ross Priory

Ross Priory

This gem of a house sits right on the banks of Loch Lomond, with Ben Lomond hovering in the background. It is one of the most prettily-situated buildings I’ve ever seen. It’s a stellar example of Scottish Gothic architecture and everything is in pristine condition. There is a 9 hole golf course across from the house and everything was very calming and quiet.

I didn’t have a chance to step inside (I was too busy photographing my wee boy on the front steps), but apparently it can host plenty of events! Wedding vow renewal anyone? ;)

In typical British fashion, the gardens here are amazing. I mean, seriously incredible. There is a magnificent walled garden (pictured above) that is perfectly neat and organized. Outside of the walled garden it is a bit more overgrown and wild with paths meandering through around older trees and plants, but absolutely stunning. (I have a thing for gardens here. They’re incredible and boast such a wide variety of flowers!)

We loved the moon gate into the walled garden. Aaaaand trying to get a good picture with a baby and a toddler was basically, oh impossible. But ignore that. Look at the gate.

But, the best part in the toddler’s eyes was letting her run wildly down to the waterfront before she spotted the park over to the right. We packed picnic lunches and she spent the entire lunch time running from our picnic table to the park and back again. And there was nobody there, so we had this whole space to ourselves.

Ross Priory is located only 40 minutes from Glasgow, and the location on the eastern side of Loch Lomond means it is quiet and secluded, as most tourists heading north travel up the western side. It’s a fantastic location if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten path place to spend an afternoon and a picnic lunch.
