Finding Mid Century Furniture in Glasgow

Updated 11 October, 2023.

As I wrote before, Scotland, particularly Glasgow, was home to mid century designers and furniture makers. And today Glasgow and Edinburgh have treasure troves of mid century items just waiting to be found. We are pretty careful today about what we bring into our house, but we’ve shopped or window shopped at most of these places, so here is where we think you should go if you’re here and looking for mid century treasures. This is really a Glasgow centric list, but there are also some pretty amazing shops in Edinburgh too!

The Best Mid Century Furniture Shops in Glasgow

This store is amazing. One of the reviews states that it is like Aladdin’s cave, and I have to agree. It’s chock-a-block full of furniture. The upstairs has mid century chairs piled on top of each other with a small winding pathway for you to walk around. And if you have a dining room set, they’ve got hundreds of chairs for you to choose from! The ground floor has a wide variety of furniture as well, and most of it is mid century, although I’ve seen older styles and they sell new Ercol furniture. The man who owns it is extremely friendly and knowledgeable about what he’s selling, so it’s always a fun experience.

This shop is a considerable distance from the nearest train station, so I’d recommend taking a car. Also, you’ll need a car to hoist all your lovely mid century furniture home.

Great Western Auctions

1291 Dumbarton Road Glasgow, G14 9UY

This is the biggest auction house here in Glasgow and if you can keep an eye on the listings, it’s a treasure trove. Mid century furniture, even in Glasgow, can go for either very cheap or expensive, depending on make, style, and honestly whether there is a lot listed that day or not. But an auction is fun, so it’s worth the time spent checking it out!

Definitely get a car here, although you can make bids online or via phone for certain items. Parking is difficult though, so get here early to find a spot.

RetroVintage

Held within Glasgow City Antiques, this is a carefully curated mid century Glasgow treasure trove. The pieces are stunning and expensive, but in excellent quality. The pictures he takes for Facebook are also really great quality, so you can truly see what is in shop and what it’s really like before going down to check it out in person. I particularly enjoy the emphasis on local Glaswegian mid century pieces.

You can walk here, but it’s quite a distance. If you plan on buying something big, absolutely bring a car.

Kean on Antiques

While it’s outside of Glasgow, this is a fun little find. I always enjoy seeing what he’s selling on Facebook. We’ve bought multiple items from here now, and have always been really pleased with our finds. It’s cute and quirky, and while it’s not exclusively mid century, but they do come across some great pieces, so it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled.

Within easy walking distance from the train station.

Mid-Century Finds UK

Online only

This was a fun find! in 2019 when I was searching for a centrepiece for my living room, I knew exactly what sort of bookcase I wanted. Something low, with legs, sliding glass and wooden doors and as I was trawling the various sites, theirs popped up and on it was the perfect bookshelf. For the perfect price, I might add! They delivered to us and the piece was in absolute pristine condition with a lovely glossy, wooden glow. This is still my favorite piece in my living room, and I’ll definitely recommended Mid Century Finds UK. They had great service and their overall collection of pieces just fantastic. I always keep an eye out for what they have for sale, hoping to strike gold again.
Today, that piece is used as a tv stand and displays some of my favourite books, including my signed copy of Wolf Hall. It’s absolutely perfect!

Of course, it should go without saying that Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, and Gumtree have a fantastic selection of items as well. I bought our set of dining chairs and initial table from eBay for £50, and while the table was ridiculous squeaky, it was a great buy for 6 good quality chairs.

There are wonderful finds out there, if you’re just willing to look!
