Balloch

The name "Balloch" is one where the "och" gets swallowed in Scottish pronunciation. Instead of saying "Ball-och" the Scottish result is "Bal-ik". The name means "village" or "hamlet" and literally translates to "village on the Loch" referring to Balloch's location on the edge of Loch Lomond. Interestingly enough, the village is at the same latitude as Moscow, Russia. I can assure you, the weather here is considerably more mild! 

Yesterday we took the train up to Balloch, which is a mere four stops away. They have the closest farmers' market and I'm always curious what one can get at local markets. (The market meets every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month from 10am-3pm. Definitely worth a stop if you're ever in the area!) This market definitely didn't disappoint with tents of meats, cheeses, breads, teas, knick-knacks, and vegetables. We meandered around, grabbed some bread and cheese (and a foot-long hot dog for Aaron) and walked down to a nearby park.  

The River Leven flows through the town and connects Loch Lomond with the River Clyde. I was impressed by the number of boats filling the river. 

We had a train to catch back home otherwise we would have explored a bit more. I got home and looked up what all there is to see in Balloch and of course there was a castle about 500 yards from where I stood to take this picture. Of course! It gives us a good excuse to travel back. ;)
